Buying a 1996 318i

I have never owned a BMW before, and am considering purchasing a 1996 BMW 318i, 5spd with 96000 miles from the original owner. I am planning on getting a mechanic to look things over and give me a recommendation. I am wondering what other people think about this car, maint costs and what it's life span is potentially, and if it is a good buy for $5300.00.

Is it an automatic or a five speed? Either way it is a good buy and most will survive well over 200k with proper care and feeding.

Fairly good buy, but make sure he has proper records and everything has been serviced on time. Like Dan said, these cars will definitely last well over 200k with proper care and feeding. But you want to make sure the previous owner actually did do the proper care and feeding.
These books have service manuals which, if serviced by a shop that services primarily BMWs, will have been filled in each time it was serviced and provides a buyer with the confidence neccessary to make such a purchase.
